In Georgia, you must pass three official tests for a driver’s license (and meet some other requirements): a vision test, a knowledge (permit) test on road signs and road rules, and a road test. If you are under 18, you must obtain an instructional permit to practice driving under supervision before applying for a license. Obtaining an instructional permit is highly recommended if you’re over 18 but lack driving experience.) The vision and knowledge tests are required to obtain an instructional permit too. If you’re under 18, you must also provide proof of school enrollment and have a parent or other responsible adult sign your application (thus providing parental consent). You must complete an approved driver education course for a provisional license (the next step in graduated licensing for teen drivers) but not for an instructional permit.

All questions on the official knowledge test are based on information in the official Georgia DDS driver’s 2025 handbook (Georgia DDS Handbook (GA Driver's Manual) 2025). An English version of this manual can be easily downloaded from this webpage in PDF format.

To prepare to pass the official knowledge test, you should start by studying this handbook. However, this step alone may not be all you need. (In 2020 – 2023, 33.1% – about one-third – of applicants failed the DDS knowledge test on their first attempt.) You should follow our entire test preparation program, including our graduated series of practice tests accompanied by our AI assistant. It can give you hints and explanations to help you learn. You can also ask it to clarify complex terms or obscure or confusing points that you may find in the handbook.

We have also created an audiobook version of the official driver’s handbook. It’s formatted as a downloadable series of eleven MP3 files, one for each chapter of the handbook: requirements for a driver’s license; obtaining a license, permit, or ID card; testing information; and so on. The longest chapter is Chapter 5: Traffic Laws, whose running time is 39 minutes and 15 seconds. The total running time of this audiobook is approximately 3 hours and 10 minutes, so you can go through it once in a couple of days. You can listen to a chapter while performing other activities or following along with the text of the PDF version.

In addition to the official handbook, we also offer our own permit test study guide to help you prepare for the day of the Georgia knowledge test. It covers what documents to take to the DDS, what fees you may have to pay, frequently missed knowledge test questions, and other last-minute knowledge test tips.
